Looking for a wargame to continue the July 4th celebrations, but want something pocket sized? Well, ok, it won’t quite fit in your pocket, but close enough. Let us introduce you to a series of travel-sized games from Worthington Publishing - the Battles Of: series. First, and most patriotically, we recommend Battles of the American Revolution: Oriskany and Freeman’s Farm.
Oriskany and Freeman’s Farm is a great intro point not just to this series of small wargames, but to the hex-and-counter genre of wargaming itself. Simulating two small but crunchy battles with only a handful of units per side, players get a feel for what hex-and-counter can offer all with a very concise rulebook that nonetheless offers the basics of movement, terrain, and conflict concepts core to more “serious” wargaming.
The Battles of the American Revolution: Oriskany and Freeman’s Farm depicts battles that were short, biting, contests- represented with minimal rules overhead. We at Wargames and Whisky heartily recommend laying it out on your coffee table at the earliest opportunity- and pouring yourself a nice snifter of High West’s Double Rye while you’re at it. It’s the ideal sip to savor while strategizing your next move.
